Millions of people upgrade to ChatGPT Plus to access advanced voice mode or the newest models—only to forget they are paying $20 every single month. Because OpenAI allows you to subscribe via both the Apple App Store and their own website, finding the cancellation button can be incredibly frustrating.
Method 1: If Billed Through Apple (iPhone/iPad)
If you signed up by double-clicking the side button on your iPhone, OpenAI has absolutely no control over your billing. You cannot cancel on OpenAI's website.
Open the Settings App
Open the primary "Settings" app (the gray gear icon) on your iPhone or iPad.
Tap Your Name
Tap your Apple ID name at the very top of the Settings menu.
Cancel Subscription
Tap Subscriptions. Tap ChatGPT in your active list, then scroll down and tap the red Cancel Subscription button.
Method 2: If Billed Directly (Web Browser)
If you entered your credit card details directly into your computer browser, you must cancel via the web portal.
- Go to chatgpt.com in any web browser and log in.
- Click your Profile Icon in the top right (or bottom left, depending on your layout).
- Click Settings, then click My Plan.
- Click Manage my subscription. This will redirect you to a Stripe billing page.
- Click Cancel Plan and confirm.
How to get a Refund on ChatGPT Plus
OpenAI's official policy is that all subscriptions are non-refundable. However, there are two major exceptions:
If you are in the US or outside those regions, your only recourse is if you were accidentally charged multiple times. To request any refund:
- If you bought via Apple: You must go to reportaproblem.apple.com and submit a refund request to Apple.
- If you bought via OpenAI: You must open the "Help" widget on chatgpt.com, go to Billing, and request a manual review from a support agent.
